Abstrakt / Utdrag
Festivals and public celebrations are found in all societies. Together with a variety of other special events they are increasingly seen as unique tourist attractions and as destination image makers. This book is intended to satisfy a growing need for concepts and practical advice on the links between festivals, special events and tourism. The specific objectives of the book are as follows: to develop a systemic approach to the planning, development, and marketing of festivals and special events as tourist attractions, catalysts, and image builders for attractions and destination areas; to provide practical planning and marketing methods and techniques for use by tourist organizations and event managers and organizers; to illustrate key concepts and methods through the presentation of examples and case studies from many settings; to illustrate the potential benefits and costs of event tourism, as well as ways to maximize benefits and prevent or ameliorate costs; to explore the meaning of 'specialness' as it applies to festivals and events, and distinguish special events from other types of tourist attractions; and finally, to draw conclusions as to the research, planning, and evaluation necessary to advance the field of event tourism.
